Sandia Ranch

Project Scope

The community process and planning analysis during the Parks Recreation and Open Space Facilities Master Plan (PROS Plan) identified a need for a new community facility in the Mid-North Valley. The County has recently acquired a piece of land on Edith Boulevard just north of Osuna and will be evaluating it for the possibility of placing a recreation complex there. A demolition and clean-up was undertaken in two phases starting in October 2015 and was completed in February 2017. Two future alternatives for development of the site were discussed during the PROS Plan process: one, a satellite center to the Raymond G. Sanchez Community Center, which could include a pool, fitness center, gym and flexible classroom space; and, two, a satellite or replacement center for the 4-H Site which would include a small office building with classrooms, rest facilities, hoop houses to grow vegetables and an arena for horse, livestock and rodeo classes and competitions. A series of community meetings have been held since May 2016, and the input to-date suggests that a mix of both options is desirable with an added cultural landscape dimension: satellite “ag-life” center operated with NM Cooperative Extension, including gym /fitness center, flexible classroom/meeting room space, livestock arena, hoop houses and urban farm training site, Camino Real interpretive exhibition and trail along ditch, shade structures, picnic areas, playground and parking.
