BernCo Commission Approves New MDC Chief

Bernalillo County – Bernalillo County Commissioners concur with County Manager Julie Morgas Baca’s choice of Greg Richardson as the new chief of the Metropolitan Detention Center – effective May 10.

The current chief, Ralph Fernandez, will retire effective May 9, 2020 and MDC Deputy Chief Greg Richardson will assume the duties of chief effective May 10.

Deputy Chief Richardson began his career in 1987 with the New Mexico State Police. Upon retiring from NMSP in 2007, Richardson filled many roles in the private sector in the training and recruiting sections of several private investigative and security firms.

Richardson came to MDC in 2017 as a deputy chief in an administrative capacity overseeing use of force, early warning systems, and training and recruiting.

“I feel Chief Richardson is the best person for the job. He is the type of strong leader needed by MDC and will continue the good work being done there,” says Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “My thanks to the county commissioners for their concurrence vote and I also want to thank Chief Ralph Fernandez for his excellent years of service to the county and MDC.”

The concurrence process was initiated in 2016 and specifies that a concurrence of a majority of county commissioners is needed before the county manager may proceed with the hiring of certain positions, including the MDC chief.

The concurrence vote passed 5 to 0.
