Are You Interested In Being An Emergency Communications Operator?

What’s An ECO?

An ECO is an emergency communications operator who is the first contact when you dial 9-1-1. This operator dispatches for law enforcement, fire, and rescue departments of Bernalillo County. They record your information on a computer aided dispatching system, talk directly with Sheriff’s Deputies, Firefighters, and Paramedics and other agencies. They give pre-arrival medical instructions for your medical emergencies. They can provide information on non-emergency situations.

They work shift work and staff the Communications Center twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. After training, you may work more than a forty hour week.

Apply at the Human Resources Department of Bernalillo County at the Government Center on the fourth floor at 1 Civic Plaza (Fifth and Marquette) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

What Are the Qualifications?

High school diploma or GED certification
Two years of work experience with computers, data entry, telephones
Able to work under stress
Able to learn radio procedures
Able to communicate in a precise manner, with clear written and oral English
Able to learn and use radio codes and related equipment
Able to learn the geography of the county
Spanish speaking preferred
Pass a 35 wpm typing test
Pass an employment medical examination
Pass a psychological examination, background investigation and hearing test
Pass a reading and writing test at the ninth grade level
Complete a 18 week training program within one year

Employee Benefits

Currently, the county pays for a portion of health insurance plans, basic life insurance, along with worker’s compensation.
Depending on time in service with the county, earned vacation time equals one hour per twenty regular hours worked. There are eleven holidays plus two personal holidays each year. Sick leave benefits are calculated one hour for every twenty regular hours worked.
The county also contributes to the employee’s 25 year retirement fund.
The county participates in an Employee Assistance Program.
