(NOW CLOSED) BernCo Offers New Relief for Those Impacted by COVID-19


Bernalillo County is offering a new COVID relief program that will give approved participants monetary assistance.  

Commissioners identified $1.4 million from the county’s general fund for emergency relief to qualifying residents within Bernalillo County, including those within the city limits of Albuquerque.

The measure, sponsored by Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada, will offer one-time payments of $500 to qualifying households that did not receive federal stimulus relief payments and do not qualify for unemployment benefits.

“These are some of our neighbors who have fallen through the cracks or are being overlooked and are in dire straits right now,” says County Commission Vice Chair Steven Michael Quezada.  “We need to try and help everybody during this pandemic, and find those who are on the edges scraping by.”

To qualify for the program, individuals must meet the following requirements:

  • Must bexperienced hardship as a result of COVID-19 (loss of job, hours, reduction in income etc.)
  • Low-Income households at or below 150% of the federal poverty level
  • Must be ineligible for federal stimulus payments and unemployment benefits

Required Documentation

  • Documentation verifying income is at or below 150% federal poverty level or evidence of public assistance:
  • Applicants will upload one of the following documents:
    • TANF
    • SNAP
    • Medicaid

General assistance

  • Supplemental Security Income
  • Unemployment letter
  • Public housing
  • Paystub
  • Bank statements
  • Federal income tax form

To verifying Bernalillo County residency applicants will: 

  • Self-attest and certify that they live in Bernalillo County within the application

Documentation verifying identity:

  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • National ID card

The application process will open Monday, Feb. 8 at noon.  Applications will be taken online through the Family Independence Initiative’s application portal at https://www.bernco.gov/economic-development/covid-relief-.aspx.  Applications will be available in both English and Spanish.  
The program will remain open until the funds are exhausted.

Anyone needing assistance with the application can click on the ‘help’ button that is located at the bottom right corner of the online application.  This allows access to live chat, Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.  Outside of those hours, applicants can still access the FAQ page or submit a ticket and the support team will respond within 48 hours.  

Once the application is submitted, questions should be directed to https://support.uptogether.org or contact the support team by clicking on the ‘help’ button at the bottom of the application page.  Chat will be live during the hours listed or, again, a ticket can be started and a response will happen within 48 hours.
