City of Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census 2020 Complete Count Committee

The City of Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census 2020 Complete Count Committee focuses on ensuring a complete count of people of all ages who live in the city or county in the upcoming federal Census 2020. The Committee will work with all of the various communities in the city and county, as well as groups and associations of all sorts, to form partnerships, identify resources and develop an effective outreach strategy, with a primary focus on hard-to-count populations.

Why is a complete count important?

The United States Constitution requires that every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau count every person in the nation. A complete and accurate count of our population is essential because this count is used to distribute billions of dollars in federal funds to Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. The city and county will lose $3,000 per uncounted person per year, which translates to $30,000 for one person over the 10-year census period. The Census count also determines the boundaries and number of representatives allocated to communities in the House of Representatives, the state legislature, and a number of other elected bodies.

Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census 2020 Committee Disappointed in Move to Cut Census Short

The Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census 2020 Complete Count Committee and its community based organizations take issue with the United States Census Bureau scaling back the census count time to Sept. 30, 2020.

The previous census end date was Oct. 30, an extension granted due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The timing and nature of this change is under question, locally and nationally, as an attempt to oppress vulnerable hard-to-count communities and skew the census numbers that are utilized for redistricting and federal funding formulas.

“While we are extremely disappointed and puzzled by the bureau’s decision to end enumeration early with insufficient notice to communities; we are not deterred from our goal of 100% participation and a complete count for all New Mexicans,” says Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Complete Count Committee Chair Cathryn McGill. “We will redouble our efforts to ensure that as many people as possible are aware of the enumerators hitting the streets to knock on doors of residents who haven’t yet responded and we are asking all of our community partners to continue to spread the word until the end of this campaign that we can still respond online or by phone. We will work harder and smarter on our way to claiming the resources that New Mexico residents have worked hard for and truly deserve.”

Currently, roughly 66% of Albuquerque/Bernalillo County residents have been counted. Beginning Aug. 11, enumerators will be knocking on doors to assist residents in filling out a questionnaire and will continue that work until the new deadline of Sept. 30, 2020.

Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census 2020 Committee Condemns Trump Administration Action

The Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census 2020 Complete Count Committee and its community based organizations condemn the recent executive order signed by President Trump, directing the Department of Commerce not to count undocumented immigrants when drawing congressional district lines, as an effort to suppress the voices and legitimacy of county residents and jeopardizes the legality of the 2020 census.

The constitutionality of this order is questioned by the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Committee and is viewed as a scare tactic to oppress vulnerable hard-to-count populations and skew the census numbers that are utilized for redistricting and federal funding formulas.

“The U.S. Census is constitutionally mandated to count every person and we will not politicize it in any way,” says Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Complete Count Committee Chair Cathryn McGill. “This committee will involve every resident and our members and workers will never ask about a person’s immigration or residency status. Our role here is to be community advocates and we take that honor and responsibility very seriously.”

During the self-reporting phase of the count, which began on March 12, roughly 65% of Albuquerque/Bernalillo County residents were counted. Beginning Aug. 11, enumerators will be knocking on doors to assist residents in filling out a questionnaire.

COVID-19 Is Not Stopping the Census

The Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census 2020 Complete Count Committee is working hard during the COVID-19 crisis as the 2020 Census count is moving forward.

As many employees are now teleworking or on leave and at home, there has never been a better time to fill out the 2020 Census questionnaire.

The Albuquerque/Bernalillo County census committee is urging everyone to be counted by getting online, using your smart phone or by filling out a paper questionnaire and mailing it in to be counted.

All residents should remember to count every person in their household, regardless of age.

“The questionnaire only takes a few minutes to fill out,” says Kristina Nelson, Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census Coordinator. “That few minutes can mean millions of dollars for many programs and services that are used by residents.”

City and county officials urge all residents to come forward and be counted as part of the campaign that happens every 10 years in the United States.

The United States Census is a survey collecting information about residents and their living and family status. The census does not include questions regarding legal residency or citizenship.

Anyone without computer access or requiring help with the Census 2020 questionnaire can call 1-844-330-2020 for assistance.

Census Count to Begin March 12 - Online Portal Now Open

 

Bernalillo County – The 2020 Census portal is already open and Albuquerque/Bernalillo County residents can go online and be counted.

City and county officials urge all residents to come forward and be counted as part of the campaign that happens every 10 years in the United States.

“Many of the programs and services are directly tied to an accurate census count,” says Kristina Nelson Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Census Coordinator. “In 2020, being counted is as easy as the click of a computer mouse and filling in the blanks.”

Each address in the city and county will receive a unique household ID that needs to be entered on the census form.

The online count begins Thursday, March 12. Residents who do not fill out the online form will received a paper form in the mail in the next month. If the paper form is not returned by May 13, Census 2020 workers will be knocking on doors to complete forms in an effort to get an accurate count. Census workers will be in the field until July 31.
