Partially funded properties are sites which were able to become new open space designated areas available to the public with substantial funding from Bernalillo County. They are not run by nor maintained by the County. For operation and programming questions relevant to these areas, please direct your inquiries to the property operators (see description of properties below to determine who that might be).

Los Ranchos Agri-Nature Center

The Agri-Nature center is primarily used for community development and agricultural education. Everyone of all ages is welcome to join in various events to further their agriculture learning and community connection. Village of Los Ranchos staffs the center regularly and a farmer does seasonally.

Route 66

Operated by the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division. View more information at the City of ABQ Open Space Division website.

Located in the Four Hills Area, travelling this moderate to strenuous hike allows you to explore the Tijeras Arroyo and see what little remains of Little Beaver Town, which was once a theme park. Exploration shows both desert grasslands and swampy wetlands overlooking the cotton woods on the arroyo. Site and environmental restoration is a high priority for this site to recover from the years of site misuse and neglect before it came into the CABQ’s possession in 2010, and to preserve some unique archeological findings on the site.

Tres Pistolas

Operated by the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division. View more information, including access directions at City of ABQ.

This property is a joint venture between Bernalillo County Open Space, City of Albuquerque Open Space, United States Forest Service, National Park Service – Rivers and Trails Program, as well as numerous Open Space users and the local public. Named for a local spring, specifically the Gun Spring, Tres Pistolas has a variety of grassland and wildlife species, trails, and access to even more nature areas, such as Sandia Mountain Wilderness Area and Sandia Foothills Open Space.

UNM North Golf Course Urban Open Space

Operated by UNM Golf Course. View more information at UNM North Golf Course website.

A true urban open space, this 79-acre oasis in the heart of Albuquerque is now protected, thanks to a unique partnership between Bernalillo County and the University of New Mexico. Protecting this open space was made possible by a 2012 agreement, approved by the Bernalillo County Commission and UNM, to protect the North Golf Course as Open Space for 15 years. UNM maintains ownership of the property, and the county contributed $1.5 million toward a major rehabilitation project. Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins led this effort, with the help of the North Campus Neighborhood Association and broad community support.

If you wish to learn more about the collaborative, community-involved planning process that took place to make this property happen, please contact Bernalillo County Open Space Staff at 505-314-0400 or openspace@bernco.gov.

Valle De Oro Urban Wildlife Refuge

Operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. View more information at the Valle de Oro website.

Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge, the Southwest’s first urban wildlife refuge, will serve as an urban oasis for both wildlife and people. On a former dairy farm just a few miles south of New Mexico’s largest metropolitan area, the refuge fulfills the goals of President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative to work with community partners to establish a 21st century conservation ethic and reconnect people, especially young people, to the natural world. The new refuge was established due to the partnership efforts of many in the community that recognized the importance of having a wildlife refuge in this urban setting.
