Office of the Assessor for Bernalillo County Hosts Third Annual Veteran Outreach Partnership with New Mexico Department of Veteran Services

In honor of Veteran’s Day, Bernalillo County Assessor, Tanya R. Giddings, would like to announce the third annual veteran outreach in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Veteran Services (NMDVS). The veteran outreach kicks off in December, and will be on the third Thursday of every month until April 2020, with an additional date in April added, to ensure property owners applying for the veteran property tax exemptions meet the deadline, which is 30 days after the mailing of the notice of value statements.

This year, because of the continuing partnership, qualifying veterans will be able to obtain, at the veteran outreach, their tax exemption certificates on-site from the NMDVS and then be able to apply for their veteran property tax exemption with the Bernalillo County Assessor’s Office.

“It is important that we honor our brave men and women who protect and serve our country, and as county assessor, I want to ensure that their service and sacrifice are not forgotten,” said Assessor Tanya R. Giddings. “That is why I am grateful for this continued partnership with the Department of Veteran Services, where over the next five months, starting in December, we will work collaboratively to streamline the process and make it easier for veterans to apply for the benefits they have earned.”

Cabinet Secretary, Judy M. Griego from the Department of Veterans Services also said, “We are extremely pleased to embark on this collaboration with the Bernalillo County, Office of the Assessor to ensure our veterans receive their property tax savings. Having a representative at their office to streamline the Veteran’s Exemption/Waiver application process is our way of ensuring they get their certificate in time for filing and to acknowledge their military service and sacrifice.”

There are two veteran property tax exemptions available. Any veteran who served a minimum of 90 consecutive active duty days (other than training), and who was honorably discharged, and is a legal resident of New Mexico, can qualify for a $4,000 reduction in the taxable value of their real property for taxation purposes. This benefit is also available to unremarried surviving spouses of veterans who would have otherwise qualified for this benefit.

Jan. 16, 2020
Feb. 20, 2020
March 19, 2020
April 16, 2020

There is also a 100% disabled veteran property tax exemption available to any veteran who has been determined to have a 100% total and permanent service-connected disability by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and who is a legal resident of New Mexico. This exemption grants a 100% property tax waiver on the veteran’s primary residence, and the veteran will need to present their award letter from the Veterans Administration to be eligible for the 100% percent benefit.

Both of these exemptions require the presentation of the tax exemption certificate issued by NMDVS. Please refer to application for needed documentation, found on the Assessor’s webpage as well as NMDVS. If veterans feel they are eligible for either of these exemptions, they should visit the Assessor’s Office or contact at 505-222- 3700.

For the veteran outreach, kicking off in December, a veteran services officer will be on-site to issue tax exemption certificates for veterans in need of one, and answer any questions about other veteran services available to them.

Veterans and surviving spouses need to bring their DD-214, New Mexico driver’s license or state ID (proof of residence) to obtain the tax exemption certificate. Both veteran tax exemptions require presentation of the tax exemption certificate issued by NMDVS. Please contact NMDVS at 1-866-433-8387 for more information.

The veterans’ services outreach will be held on every third Thursday of the month from December 2019 to April 2020 at the Assessor’s Office from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (501 Tijeras Ave. NW Albuquerque, NM 87102). The Assessor’s Office will also hold an additional outreach on April 23, 2020. Veterans are encouraged to apply before April 30, 2020 in order to receive the exemption for tax year 2020.

Please visit the assessor’s website for additional information. Applications are available at Bernalillo County Assessor website or visit the NMDVS website.
