BernCo Commission Approves Construction Project at Carlito Springs

Bernalillo County commissioners have approved $1.4 million for phase two of construction at Carlito Springs in the East Mountains.

This latest funding is possible through the use of a county parks and recreation mil levy and state legislative grants set to expire in 2020.

The monies will be used to install a fire suppression system in the main structure and the caretaker’s quarters. The fire suppression system will utilize water from the existing spring and will double as a water source for a new irrigation system. That irrigation system along with a new septic system and parking lot will also be completed in this phase.

“This funding will help the county move ahead with the major renovations at, what is considered by many, to be the jewel of the county open space properties,” says County Commission Vice Chair Charlene Pyskoty. “It’s been a challenge to get the money to make sure the job is done right, but it’ll all be worth it in the end.”

The construction contract was awarded to Rivercrest Construction, the lowest responsive and responsible of three bidders.

The commission also granted signature approval to the county manager for any future funding amendments or agreements for this project.

Phase two is set to be completed by fall of 2020. The next phase of the project will renovate the main building and construction is scheduled for 2021.

The measure was approved on a 5 to 0 vote.
