BernCo Commission Thanks Lobo Little League for its Commitment to Challenger Baseball

05/14/2019

At its May 14 administrative meeting the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners recognized and thanked Lobo Little League for its commitment to our community and the children who participate in Challenger Baseball.

We thank you for the outstanding work and dedication of the Challenger Baseball Division players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters in giving every Bernalillo County child the opportunity to play baseball and for teaching our community about inclusiveness and increasing awareness and understanding of children with exceptional talents.

Lobo Little League is the only little league in the State of New Mexico that hosts "Challenger Baseball", an adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. In the Challenger Division, coaches, parents, and volunteers from across Bernalillo County devote countless hours to giving children with all levels of ability the opportunity to play youth baseball on a real team.

The wide range of abilities of Challenger participants allows flexibility in the rules. Each player gets a turn at bat, advances through the bases, and takes a turn in the outfield. “Buddies” assist Challenger athletes in the areas of batting, base running and defense, but only as needed. In programs across the United States, the “buddy” system helps children and adults build lifelong friendships.
