Portion of Bridge Boulevard to be Renamed Avenida Dolores Huerta

The Board of County Commissioners voted tonight to rename a portion of Bridge Boulevard Avenida Dolores Huerta after the native New Mexican who has been a fierce advocate for farm workers, immigrants and women.

Avenida Dolores Huerta will run from the city/county boundary at the Rio Grande to the east and Isleta Boulevard to the west.

“The renaming of this portion of Bridge Boulevard to Avenida Dolores Huerta has been supported by business owners and residents alike,” says Bernalillo County Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada. “In April of 2017, Bernalillo County renamed Gateway Park, located at Bridge and Isleta SW, Dolores Huerta Gateway Park. Now the road leading from the Rio Grande to the park will bear her name as well, honoring this amazing woman. It is important for residents and governments to honor the legacy of leaders like Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez and to bring their history of work to future generations.”

Avenida Dolores Huerta will connect to Avenida Cesar Chavez, within the city of Albuquerque, making it the nation’s first intersection of streets bearing the names of these two civil rights leaders who worked side-by-side for so many years.

There are 21 properties zoned for commercial uses that will be affected by the name change. Notification letters were sent to property owners and agencies of interest.

The portion of Bridge Boulevard from the Rio Grande east to 4th Street is in the city of Albuquerque. The city is planning to vote on a similar measure in the future.

The resolution passed on a 5-0 vote.
