2019 Tax Collection Due Date Passes - Treasurer Nancy Bearce Thanks Property Tax Payers and Staff

BernCo Treasurer Nancy Bearce reports 94% of the 2019 property taxes were collected by the due date and says thank you to all property tax payers for their payments coinciding with the coronavirus (COVID-19) health emergency.

“Never in Bernalillo County history have property tax payments been held under a state health emergency order,” says Bernalillo County Treasurer Nancy Bearce. “Having to close the office to the public, continue critical services delivery while remaining healthy by working from home was a challenge. Thank you to staff who stepped up their service to the public in unique ways.”

Next month, the Treasurer’s Office will allocate taxes to the public beneficiaries such as: The University of New Mexico Hospital, Albuquerque Public Schools, Central New Mexico Community College, the City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, villages of Los Ranchos and Tijeras, public charter schools, Albuquerque Metro Arroyo Flood Control Authority, Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, and others.

Treasurer Bearce reports, “Many of the public entities I collect for have called into my Office or commissioners asking about their June payments. In the 30-day due period, the county collected about 94% of taxes due, compared to a normal 96 – 97% collection rate by the due date.”

The entities will receive their mill levy amount based on how much property tax has been collected. The scheduled monthly distribution of these funds occurs June 19, 2020.

“2019 will go down in the history books as a year of extraordinary happenings including the Local Election law delaying November payments and the COVID health pandemic for the April collections,” adds County Treasurer Nancy Bearce.

Lastly, the Treasurer is working with county commissioners and state legislators, in preparation for the future special legislative session, on possible solutions to taxpayer issues and the state’s inability to delay tax payments during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
