Planning & Development Services

The Planning Section is responsible for a wide range of short and long-term development functions, including administration of land use ordinances (i.e. subdivision, zoning and impact fees), and drafting plans, studies and ordinances.

The Planning Department processes all current land use cases (zone changes/Special Use Permits, master plans, plan amendments, sector plans) for the County.

East Route 66 Sector Development Plan

In June 2018 the Bernalillo County Board of County Commissioners adopted the East Route 66 Sector Development Plan. This plan created a new, optional property zoning to allow specific commercial uses along Route 66 that provide services for East Mountain residents and for tourists driving along the historic Mother Road.

The original plan included only the eastern two miles of the roadway, from Dressage Road east to the County Line. Based on the success of that effort, Bernalillo County is considering extending the boundary of the sector development plan west to include more properties.

This plan will rely on public involvement to determine which properties and which uses make the most sense for East Route 66. Please join us for a public kickoff on December 12.
