Planning & Development Services

The Planning Section is responsible for a wide range of short and long-term development functions, including administration of land use ordinances (i.e. subdivision, zoning and impact fees), and drafting plans, studies and ordinances.

The Planning Department processes all current land use cases (zone changes/Special Use Permits, master plans, plan amendments, sector plans) for the County.

Sunport Commerce Center Design Overlay Zone (DOZ) Plan

The Bernalillo County Planning and Development Services Department is initiating a planning process to develop a Design Overlay Zone for the area located west of I-25, east of 2nd Street, north of Rio Bravo Boulevard, and generally south of Woodward (refer to map on the right). This area is being called the "Sunport Commerce Center" due to its potential for industry to develop at this location and its proximity to the Albuquerque International Sunport. This effort will result in a document with standards to be considered for approval by the Bernalillo County Commission through its public hearing process.

The purpose of the design standards is to elevate the requirements for building and site design of properties within this area. This area is zoned for light and heavy industrial uses (M-1 and M-2 zones) and the county would like to mitigate the potentially negative impacts of these allowed uses by proposing a set of design standards that would help to create an aesthetically pleasing and attractive “industrial park” setting.

Plan Submittal to County Planning Commission (CPC): Feb. 25, 2019

The Planning and Development Services Department is delaying application submittal of the proposed plan from Jan. 28, 2019, to the Feb. 25, 2019, deadline in order to allow time for a community-wide meeting and to allow additional time for input.
