Bernalillo County and Albuquerque Fire Department to Host Active Shooter Training

Bernalillo County – The Bernalillo County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Albuquerque Fire Department are hosting the Active Threat Integrated Response Course this week. This training is provided through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security funding.

A VIP/media tour is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Albuquerque Fire Department Training Academy, 11500 Sunset Gardens SW, 87121.

First responders, law enforcement and fire/EMS will be attending the training.

“This training is just one of several courses that have been brought in over the last year that are designed to prepare our community to respond to a critical incident,” says Richard Clark, Bernalillo County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. “This course is designed to improve integration between law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) in active shooter events.”

The course provides law enforcement officers with key medical skills based on tactical emergency casualty care guidelines, which can be used at the point of injury to increase survivability of victims. The course also provides a model framework for law enforcement, fire, and EMS to integrate responses during an active shooter event.

The training this week focuses on the Rescue Task Force concept. The Rescue Task Force is a team of law enforcement and Fire/EMS personnel that can provide stabilizing medical care during an active shooter or critical incident, while additional law enforcement teams continue to secure the scene. In the past, victims often waited for extended periods of time to receive care, dying from injuries that could have been otherwise treated.

The following agencies are participating in the training this week:

  • Albuquerque Police Department
  • Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department
  • New Mexico State Police
  • Rio Rancho Police Department
  • Albuquerque Fire Department
  • Bernalillo County Fire Department
  • Rio Rancho Fire Department
  • Valencia County Fire Department
  • Albuquerque Ambulance Service

The National Center for Biomedical Research and Training at Louisiana State University offers Department of Homeland Security-certified courses covered under DHS’s Homeland Security National Training Program. The instructors for this course are subject matter experts with years of experience in their specific field.
