Serenity Mesa Recovery Center Announces Expansion to Include Services for Young Women

08/30/2018

Non-profit, government and private sector leaders are all joining in the battle to save the lives of those who are struggling with an addiction.

Starting in September, Serenity Mesa, a local non-profit and recovery center will be growing their impact on recovery by expanding their services to include an eight-bed facility for young women (ages 14-21) who are living with a substance use disorder. Serenity Mesa opened three years ago, in May 2015 with a 10-bed facility for young men. They’ve served 75 men since opening.

The full continuum of care is provided at Serenity Mesa including long-term substance abuse treatment, sober living, housing, group and family therapy, life skills training, healthy lifestyle classes, education (high school and college), job placement and job training, community engagement, and support connecting to a sense of purpose. Three out of four former residents report they continue to use the skills they learned while at Serenity Mesa after they discharge to help them stay sober and to help them deal with challenges they are facing.

“Things that will help our residents sustain sobriety and re-enter their communities as strong, independent members. Our goal is that our residents will have the knowledge and skills needed to be able to live a drug-free, independent life. We will help them develop a sense of meaning and purpose that they may not have had before… A fresh new start at life,” said Executive Director Jennifer Weiss-Burke.

The Bernalillo County Behavioral Health Initiative is contributing $250,000 a year to support the expansion. The State of New Mexico, CYFD, and the City of Albuquerque are several other entities that Weiss-Burke credits with making this expansion possible through their support and funding.

Day to day operations at Serenity Mesa are created through numerous community agencies, such as: RFK Charter School, New Day, and juvenile probation and drug court services.
