BernCo Participates in National Emergency Alerts Test

10/01/2018

Bernalillo County is participating in a nationwide exercise at 12:18 p.m., New Mexico time, on Wednesday, Oct. 3 to test national wireless emergency alerts and the emergency alert system in general.

The test, coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will send a text message to all active cell phones serviced by wireless providers. The test will assess the readiness of the emergency alerts system and determine if improvements are needed.

No signup or cell phone adjustments are required to receive wireless emergency alerts. These alerts are already used to warn the public about dangerous weather, missing children and other timely situations.

“Emergency alerts are a crucial tool for local governments to provide messages to the public,” says Bernalillo County emergency manager Richard Clark. “Bernalillo County will soon have the ability to also use the system to alert residents in specific areas or countywide for safety concerns and emergencies.”
