Bernalillo County – County Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada and City Council President Klarissa J. Peña invite the community to learn more about the next phase of the Route 66 Visitor Center project.

A community meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Ted M. Gallegos Community Center, 6900 Gonzales Road SW.

“Route 66 is the Mother Road and was known as the Gateway to the Southwest,” states Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada. “Our visitor center will help to preserve its history, our state’s part in making that history, and serve as a gateway to our own county and city, stimulating Bernalillo County’s tourism and economy industries.”

Project consultants will share details about the proposed visitor center features, building designs, and timelines for phase one of this project.

“The Route 66 Visitor Center has long been a community lead project and we’re excited to share the next phase,” says Councilor Peña. “We think people will be pleasantly surprised that this isn’t your average visitor center, it will be a community gathering space that will engage our own community members and tourists with the mother road’s rich history and will lead to opportunities for economic development along the corridor.”

This project is a collaborative effort between Bernalillo County, City of Albuquerque, State of New Mexico and local stakeholders, Southwest Alliance of Neighbors (SWAN) and the West Central Community Development Group, to create a space that celebrates Route 66 while serving the local community.
