American Flag Bernalillo CountyBernalillo County’s Forgotten Heroes Burial Program has received a 2014 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties.

Since 2010, Bernalillo County, the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Santa Fe National Cemetery and the rest of the New Mexico counties have worked together to arrange honorable dispositions of unclaimed/indigent deceased veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program

Fourteen veterans, 13 from Bernalillo County and one from Otero County, were interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery as part of the New Mexico Forgotten Heroes Burial Program Nov. 1. The 13 Bernalillo County veterans were identified through the county’s Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program.

County Commission Honors Burial Program Leaders

The Bernalillo County Commission honored members of the county Purchasing Department involved in the Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program, which steps in when deceased county residents are unclaimed and are of indigent status and family members have no means to cremate them.

Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program

Bernalillo County honored 85 people Tuesday in a special burial ceremony at Evangelico Cemetery.

The ceremony was organized by the Bernalillo County Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program, which steps in when deceased persons of Bernalillo County are unclaimed and are of indigent status and family members have no means to cremate them.
