BernCo to Demolish Alvarado Square Bridge

Demolition has been scheduled on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 6 a.m. for the Alvarado Square Pedestrian Bridge, located just north of Silver Avenue on Fourth Street SW.

The bridge, which connects Alvarado Square and a parking structure on the east side of Fourth Street, needs to be taken down as a matter of public safety. The joints that connect the bridge to Alvarado Square are rusted due to water damage. The rust damage is severe enough that the bridge is at risk of collapse if those joints fail.

The contractor’s estimated cost for the engineering analysis and work to remove the bridge is $188,063. The Bernalillo County Commission approved the money for this project at its Oct. 13, 2020 administrative meeting.

At this time, ownership of the bridge has not been determined, but Bernalillo County has decided to remove the bridge for public safety reasons and to avoid costly delays to the overall project.

Construction at the Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square campus is more than 75% complete and is on schedule for completion in February 2021. County staff from various offices around the county are preparing to move into this facility from their current locations scattered throughout the county.

As a precaution, Fourth Street between Silver Avenue and Gold Avenue, has been closed since the damage was discovered and will remained closed until the bridge is taken down.
