BernCo to Add Anderson Farm to its Open Space Inventory

    08/21/2019

The County Commission passed a resolution tonight approving the purchase of the Anderson Farm Open Space property in the South Valley.

The property was originally part of the Anderson Farm, which included much of the Adobe Acres subdivision and the Las Estancias commercial development. It is the largest remaining tract of agricultural land in the South Valley, and will be the county's largest agricultural property acquisition.

“The property will be purchased with open space mill levy funds and will be added to the county's open space inventory,” says Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada. “The 147.2 acres has been used for agriculture and will continue to be used for farming as part of the county's Cultivating Bernalillo County initiative. I’m proud to have this open space property in my commission district”

The county manager will now execute a purchase agreement for the land for an amount not to exceed $5.67 million ($38,500 per acre) plus up to $20,000 in closing costs.

During the community planning process for the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Facilities Master Plan, large agricultural properties, like the Anderson Farm, were identified repeatedly as a priority for future acquisition by the county.

The general fund will be reimbursed with open space mill levy revenue, as it is collected over the next two years, in the amount of $1.2 million per year.

The County Commission voted 5-0 in favor of the open space purchase.
