BernCo to Sign Agreement with City of Albuquerque for Championship Soccer Complex at Mesa del Sol

Bernalillo County commissioners have directed the county manager to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Albuquerque for the design and construction of a pro-practice/championship soccer facility at Mesa del Sol, just south of the Isleta Amphitheater.  Additionally, the city will have managerial duties at the complex.

Construction of the professional grade soccer field has already been completed by Bernalillo County.  The agreement with the city will be for the locker room, restrooms and other amenities necessary to operate the facility.

“The field alone puts the county in some very elite soccer company,” says County Commission Vice Chair Steven Michael Quezada.  “Adding the necessary facilities gives the county unlimited possibilities for regional soccer tournaments and makes the county a major player for youth sports tournaments.”

The county signed an agreement with the New Mexico United Soccer Club, on Feb. 8, to make the championship field the club’s practice turf.

The regional recreation complex was established in 1995 and a master plan was completed the following year.

The complex can currently be used for soccer, cricket, football, as well as other outdoor activities.

The resolution passed on a 4 to 0 vote.  Commissioner Debbie O’Malley was not present for the vote.
