Tiny Home Village Celebrates Grand Opening

2:31 PM

Bernalillo County, in partnership with the Albuquerque Indian Center, accepted the certificate of occupancy on the Tiny Home Village project and has welcomed the first residents to the community located at 101 Texas St. SE, in the International District.

Construction on the project began in late 2019 but has been hampered by coronavirus (COVID-19) related issues such as supply-chain shortages.  However, construction continued with enhanced health safety protocols, and the village, designed to act as a safe-haven and reintroduction housing for qualifying persons experiencing homelessness, has been completed.

“The goal here has always been to assist individuals in our community who are experiencing homelessness with a temporary, secure, and safe option while they take the steps necessary to secure permanent housing,” says Bernalillo County Commissioner Debbie O’Malley.

The Tiny Home Village is located on about 1.5 acres of land at the Albuquerque Indian Center.  The gated community has 30 homes, each measuring 120 square feet.  Five homes have been equipped with ramps to accommodate wheelchairs.  Most homes are set up for single occupancy, but a limited number are arranged for couples.  Only residents over 18 years of age are allowed in the tiny homes.  The houses are designed as living/sleeping quarters but do not have running water.  A gathering house is onsite for meal preparation and personal hygiene needs. The cost of the project was $4.92 million.

While living in the village, residents will be offered social services along with assistance finding employment for financial independence and permanent housing.

“A key in your pocket and a solid roof over your head offers the peace of mind and stability needed to move forward in life,” adds Commissioner O’Malley.

The first five residents, or core members of the village, should be fully moved-in by the end of February, the first 10 by the end of April and full occupancy by July.

Anyone wishing to support the village and its residents with an online monetary donation, can do so through the Albuquerque Indian Center website at
