Cañón de Carnué Land Grant Bicentennial Celebrations this Weekend

The Fiesta de San Antonio de Padua, celebrating the bicentennial of the founding of San Antonio Catholic Church and the Cañón de Carnué Land Grant, is June 14–15 at 7 San Antonio Drive in Cedar Crest.

The bicentennial celebrations continue the experience of Genízaro identity, the exhibit on Genízaro culture, at the Gutiérrez Hubbell House, ended in May. The exhibit shared the resilience and persistence of the Genízaro people, and the new identities and communities formed when people were removed from their lands, cultures and families.

Regalia included in the exhibit of Genízaro identity will be shown at the Fiesta de San Antonio. The Matachines dance, performed at the exhibit, will also return.

“Fiestas are a special time to celebrate. The indigenous heritage of the Cañón de Carnué Land Grant is an integral part of the East Mountain community,” says Commissioner Pyskoty. “We want to invite people to the East Mountains to see our beautiful open space lands and to know our communities. The Fiesta de San Antonio is one of the many great opportunities to visit us.”

The bicentennial celebrations start at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 14 with the visperas service. The fiesta opens on Saturday, June 15 with mass at 10 a.m., followed by a procession to Bernalillo County’s Ojito de San Antonio Open Space at 11 a.m. Events continue throughout the day, and conclude with a dance at 7 p.m. at the Carune Land Grant Hall.
