Voter Registration Agent Training Resumes in Bernalillo County

07/09/2020

Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover announces the resumption of Voter Registration Agent training in Bernalillo County.

“Spring Third-party Registration Agent or ‘VRA’ training was interrupted this year by the coronavirus pandemic and we can’t resume in-person training just yet,” said Clerk Linda Stover. “But thanks to Bureau of Elections staff, registered voters who want to become VRAs can now watch a training video online and make an appointment to come in and complete the process.”

A “third-party registration agent” is any person, entity, or organization that assists in registering a voter that is not a county, state or federal agency. The duties of a VRA include offering a prospective voter a voter registration application form (which is tracked by agent name and ID number), assist in the preparation of the form as requested, and review the form to ensure it is completely filled out and legible. VRAs then hand-deliver the form to the County Clerk’s Office within 48 hours for processing.

Traditionally the training takes place in-person at the Voting Machine Warehouse. Given the approaching general election and uncertainty as to when in-person training can resume, Bureau of Elections Training and Outreach staff produced the training as a video. Once the video has been watched, prospective VRAs can call 505-468-1290 option 6 to schedule an appointment to come in, show photo ID, sign the paperwork and pick up their credential and VRA materials. More information…

State law on third-party registration agents is found in Section 1-4-49 NMSA 197.
