Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Deploys GPS-Based

Pursuit Management System, Giving Deputies Another Innovative Tool

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is deploying a new technology which provides deputies an alternative to pursuits, in a constant effort to keep the public safe and our deputies from peril.

StarChase uses GPS technology to provide real-time intelligence and collaborative awareness for a law enforcement response. The vehicle installed technology utilizes compressed air to deploy a non-lethal adhesive “tag” to a fleeing suspect’s vehicle. Once attached to the suspect’s vehicle, deputies are able to utilize the technology to track the vehicle covertly. Deputies can then apprehend the suspect(s) in a coordinated, synchronized and measured manner.

Deputies have utilized this technology during 18 separate incidents since June 30, 2017. 15 of those incidents were successful. To date deputies have recovered approximately $100,000 in stolen property.

“The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is excited to be the first agency in New Mexico to use this technology. As we have all seen, high-speed pursuits are very dangerous. This gives us an opportunity to still catch criminals, reducing danger to the public. This technology empowers deputies with state of the art technology, provides situational awareness in real time and safe guards our number one priority, the public! With this system, there is no place to run and no place to hide.” – Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III
