Fatal Crash Investigation

On August 18, 2017 at about 11:30 pm, deputies observed a confirmed stolen vehicle in the area of Edith Blvd and Candelaria Road. Based on the preliminary investigation, deputies did not activate their emergency equipment to engage the vehicle, but continued to follow the vehicle at normal speeds. The driver turned off the headlights to the vehicle and attempted to elude the deputies. The deputies followed from a safe distance and when Air Support was overhead the deputies backed off. The suspect’s vehicle began to drive in an extremely reckless manner, turning on and off its headlights. Air support tracked the vehicle throughout the city and East Mountain area. Deputies remained in the area while Air Support called out the location of the stolen vehicle and tried to gain an advantage to deploy “spike belts”, but were unable to do so. The vehicle continued to travel at reckless speeds, taking actions which placed themselves and other motorists in immediate danger. The vehicle crashed into a tow truck at the intersection of Tramway Blvd and Central Ave.

The vehicle caught fire due to the crash and deputies were able to respond to the scene. Deputies immediately took life saving measures in an attempt to rescue the occupants from the burning vehicle.

Four occupants of the vehicle were removed by rescue personnel and deputies on scene. Two of the four occupants succumbed to their injuries. The two other passengers were transported to a local hospital. The tow truck driver was also transported to a local hospital with complaints of injury. BCSO and APD traffic units arrived and took over the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and no further information is available for release.
