Deputy Involved Shooting

(Bernalillo County, New Mexico) July 28, 2017 – On July 28, 2017 at approximately 6:00am, Deputies with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of 2nd St and I-25 to assist Isleta Police Department in reference to a subject stealing golf carts.

Upon arrival to the area, Deputies received an additional call in reference to a burglary in progress.

As Deputies were responding to the residence, they heard a window breaking on another nearby house and responded to investigate. A perimeter around the residence was set up when the garage door opened with the offender in control of a vehicle.

As the suspect was attempting to flee, two hostages were seen in the vehicle screaming for help and banging on the windows of the car.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, when the driver drove directly towards them, striking one of the Deputies who was on foot.

At least one Deputy discharged his firearm.

The Deputy was transported to a local Hospital to receive medical attention. The offender was pronounced dead on scene.

Chief Deputy Ray Chavez will conduct a press conference at 10:45am at 2nd St and Vidal SW.

(Bernalillo County, New Mexico) July 26, 2017 – On July 26, 2017 at approximately 4:54am, Deputies with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of 2017 Nancy SW in reference to a drive by shooting.

The calling party stated that her ex boyfriend, later identified as Ricardo Carrillo, was waiting for her outside her residence and attempted to force her inside his vehicle. The victim was able to escape and ran away towards her residence as Carrillo brandished a firearm and discharged at least one round.

Deputies located the vehicle driven by Carrillo and after attempting to perform a traffic, a pursuit ensued towards the area of 114th St and De Vargas SW, where Carrillo fled on foot.

Carrillo gained entry into a residence occupied by a mother and her three children, before fleeing towards another residence, located at 11100 Egret SW, which was occupied by a mother and her two sons. The homeowner was able to safely exit the residence and contact 911.

Deputies stablished a perimeter around the location and gave Carrillo multiple commands to exit the residence, which he refused to obey. SWAT Unit responded to the location and successfully apprehended Carrillo.

The vehicle driven by Carrillo was found to be stolen and a firearm in plain sight was located inside.

Carrillo was interviewed by detectives and subsequently booked on charges of Aggravated Assault on a Household Member, Aggravated Assault on a Household Member w/Intent to commit a violent Felony, Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Fleeing, Unlawful taking of a Motor Vehicle, Burglary 2counts, Child Abuse 5counts, Tampering with Evidence, Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer 2counts, and False Imprisonment 7counts.

The investigation is on-going. No other information is available at this time

Deputy Involved Shooting Update July 26

(Bernalillo County, New Mexico) July 26, 2017 – After preliminary investigation in reference to the Deputy involved shooting on July 25, 2017, detectives have been able to identify the offender as Charles Chavez born in April 22.

Chavez has an extensive criminal history which includes harassment, assault on a Peace Officer, battery on a Peace Officer, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, car-jacking, assault on a school employee and probation violation.

The deputy involved, Charles Coggins, has served approximately 5 years with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and is currently under administrative leave.

The investigation is on-going. No other information is available at this time
