Deputy Involved Shooting

(Bernalillo County, New Mexico) July 25, 2017 – On July 25, 2017 at approximately 1:00am, deputies with the Bernalillo County Sherrif’s Department were on a self-initiated call in the area of 1600 Goff Blvd. SW when a deputy encountered a suspect.

A struggle ensued and shots were fired by the deputy. The deputy is uninjured and the offender is currently being medically treated at UNM Hospital. The deputy is on standard administrative leave.

This investigation is ongoing and will slightly effect northbound traffic at Goff/Isleta SW.

Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III will conduct a press conference at 2:00pm at 400 Roma NW, Sheriffs conference room.

Child Abuse Press Release

(Bernalillo County, New Mexico) July 18, 2017 – On July 17, 2017 Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from Building Bridges Day Care regarding a 2 years old boy which had been dropped off by his mother Monica Lopez.

Once the child was dropped off, Day care personnel were able to notice several bite marks and numerous other unexplained bruises to his bottom/buttocks, torso and facial area.

Deputies then responded to the location and upon their contact with day care personnel it was learnt that Lopez had stated to them not to be alarmed if they see bite mars on the child as she bites him when she gets anxious.

Upon further investigation, Lopez admitted to Detectives to biting and sucking on her son’s buttocks and said does it all the time. In addition, Lopez reported that her boyfriend, later identified as Matthew Barraza, also likes to do the same.

Lopez was unable to explain other bruises and marks on her son’s body.

Both Lopez and Barraza were charged with Child Abuse, Conspiracy and Criminal Sexual Contact.

Smart Speaker Contacts Law Enforcement During Violent Domestic Dispute

Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III stated, “The unexpected use of this new technology to contact emergency services has possibly helped save a life. This amazing technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation.”

We have received local and national inquiries regarding a violent domestic dispute incident. We have received questions regarding the specific device used to call 911. Based on the victim’s statements and 911 recording, it is presumed the “Alexa” application was utilized to contact law enforcement. Please see attached press release for more information.

Deputy Involved Shooting Update

After preliminary investigation, detectives have determined one deputy fired his weapon during the incident which occurred on July 4, 2017. The deputy, Charles Coggins has served approximately 5 years with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. Both deputies involved have returned to full duty.

Attached is video surveillance of the suspect at the car wash in the Red Monte Carlo. The suspect can be seen manipulating what appears to be a firearm in his waist band after observing the deputies. The silver object seen in this video is consistent with the firearm found on scene.

The investigation is ongoing. The exact number of shots fired is still being investigated. No other information is available at this time.
