New Mexico Department of Veteran Services Holds a Curbside Tax Certificate Service Day

The Bernalillo County Assessor’s Office is excited to share that the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (DVS) will hold “Curbside Tax Certificate Service Day” in Albuquerque on May 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of its northeast Albuquerque office located on 5201 Eagle Rock NE. The tax-exemption certificate received from DVS can be applied toward a qualifying veteran or surviving unmarried spouse’s property, for tax-saving purposes, with the Office of the Bernalillo County Assessor.

Once a veteran or surviving unmarried spouse has received their tax exemption certificate from the DVS, they need to bring the certificate to the Assessor’s Office walk-up transaction window located at 501 Tijeras Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM and apply for the veteran exemptions available to them before the May 29, 2020 deadline.

There are two veteran property tax exemptions available to veterans and surviving unmarried spouses. Any veteran who served a minimum of 90 consecutive active duty days (other than training), and who was honorably discharged, a legal resident of New Mexico, can qualify for a $4,000 reduction in the taxable value of their real property for taxation purposes.

There is also a 100% disabled veteran property tax exemption available to any veteran who has been determined to have 100% total and permanent service-connected disability by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and who is a legal resident of New Mexico. This exemption grants a 100% property tax waiver on the veteran’s primary residence, and the veteran will need to present their award letter from the Veteran’s Administration to be eligible for the 100% benefit.

In observance of coronavirus (COVID-19) safe practices, the DVS veterans Service officers will wear protective equipment and is offering curbside “car hop-style” service for the filing of the state veteran property tax exemption certificates.
