Commission Approves SAFER Grant to Fund 10 New Firefighter Positions

The County Commission approved funding for 10 new full-time firefighter positions for the Bernalillo County Fire Department.

The Bernalillo County Fire Department applied for and received a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The SAFER Grant will total $1.48 million over a five-year period. As a condition of this award, Bernalillo County is required to contribute a cost match in the amount of $569,651 of non-federal funds. The federal share is $916,399.

“This grant will allow us to hire 10 full-time firefighters as the need for increased staffing is essential due to continuous residential and business growth throughout the unincorporated areas of the county,” says BernCo Fire Chief Greg Perez.

The grant will also allow the Bernalillo County Fire and Rescue Department to increase its float position pool and alleviate some overtime costs.

Last night, the County Commission voted 5-0 to accept the grant.
