September Recognized as National Preparedness Month

At its Sept. 24 administrative meeting the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners proclaimed September 2019 as National Preparedness Month in Bernalillo County, and encouraged all residents to sign up for the emergency alert system and “Stay Informed” to protect their lives and loved ones.

Emergencies and natural disasters can strike any home and any family, at any place and at any time, and being informed in the event of an emergency with a plan to evacuate or find shelter is paramount to survival.

Each September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency sponsors National Preparedness Month to encourage Americans to reduce their risks in an emergency and become more involved in community preparedness.

Public safety officials use timely and reliable systems to alert residents and their families in the event of natural or man-made disasters, and 2019’s theme is “Stay Informed.” Americans are encouraged to be prepared by signing up for the National Emergency Alert System, and learning where to find shelter, first aid, and lifesaving measures in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Bernalillo County will be assisting residents to stay safe by posting 26 “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” signs provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at low water crossings.

Bernalillo County supports preparedness for all-hazard emergency situations by detailed planning, training exercises and equipment appropriations for response throughout the county, as well as collaborating with state, federal and other local agencies for assistance and funding in case of disasters.
