November Recognized as National Diabetes Month

11/12/2019

On Nov. 12 the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners proclaimed November 2019 in Bernalillo County as National Diabetes Month and encouraged county residents to educate themselves about ways to avoid and manage this disease, support all individuals living with diabetes, and fight this disease through education and research.

Diabetes is a disease in which a shortage of insulin leads to dangerously high blood glucose levels that can lead to severe, chronic health problems such as heart disease, blindness, amputations, and kidney failure. More than 30 million Americans have type 2 diabetes and 84 million Americans are at risk for type 2 diabetes. More than 1 million Americans have type 1 diabetes with another 1.5 million diagnosed with diabetes each year. Six percent of Bernalillo County residents and eleven percent of New Mexicans overall are living with diabetes.

Diabetes affects people of all races, ethnic groups, genders, ages and household incomes, but has a disproportionate impact on persons of Hispanic, African-American and Native American ancestry.

It is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and results in staggering personal and financial costs for individuals with the disease, but, because of the dedication of health care providers, researchers, and advocates, important strides have been made in combating this disease.

Diabetes has no cure but a healthy lifestyle including physical activity, healthy food choices, and avoiding or quitting tobacco can help individuals prevent Type 2 diabetes and help those already diagnosed manage their disease.

The American Diabetes Association hosts National Diabetes Month each year to educate Americans and increase community awareness of the diabetes epidemic and the importance of a healthy lifestyle in diabetes prevention and care.
