County Unveils Crime Fighting Tools for Southwest Mesa

12/19/2018

Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque are taking aim at violators and lawbreakers committing crimes on the Southwest Mesa of Bernalillo County.

New signs have been posted informing all residents and visitors that dumping of trash and discharging firearms are illegal on the mesa.

“Illegal shooting cost one man his life,” says Bernalillo County Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada. “Between the guns being fired and the trash being dumped by the roadsides and in arroyos, Southwest Mesa residents have had enough and it is time to take back the area.”

Southwest Mesa resident Johnny Armijo was killed by a stray bullet in 2017.

Along with the new signs stating county ordinance violations, the Sheriff’s Department has announced that two deputies will give dedicated time on each shift to Southwest Mesa law enforcement.

Additionally, the Sheriff’s Department will utilize a drone for surveillance in the area for help in identifying violators and lawbreakers.

“Many Southwest Mesa residents are also city residents and the City of Albuquerque is a proud partner in this new enforcement effort,” says Albuquerque City Council President Klarissa Pena.

Thirty signs are being installed and the dedicated patrols by the Sheriff’s Department have already begun with several arrests already on the books.
